WCTWS Code of Conduct

As members of the wildlife profession, all our colleagues deserve to be
welcomed, respected, and valued.

Our Annual Winter Meeting provides an important opportunity for education, exchange of ideas, mentoring young conservationists, networking with fellow wildlifers, and engagement with colleagues in a variety of ways. Our hope is that each participant will benefit from their involvement in the conference. Even as we recognize the importance of and strive for diversity in our natural world, we acknowledge the contribution of individual diversity to our profession. Taken from our parent organization: “The Wildlife Society recognizes the value of including the richness of human diversity in our efforts to discover, educate, inform policy, and involve the public in wildlife science and management.”

In this light and with the goal of ensuring that the Winter Meeting is welcoming and inclusive for all, we put forward the following guidelines for professional behavior:

    • treat all participants with respect and consideration, valuing the diversity of views and opinions that may be different than those you hold;
    • communicate with respect for others and critique ideas rather than individuals;
    • avoid personal attacks directed towards participants;
    • be mindful of your colleagues and your surroundings; and
    • professionalism should be exercised at all times.

The following are examples of behavior that will not be tolerated:

    • harassment, threats, intimidation, or discrimination of any kind or in any form;
    • physical or verbal abuse;
    • verbal comments related to gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, race, religion, national origin which may reasonably be interpreted as offensive, insulting, or obscene or engaging in any conduct of a stalking or threatening nature directed to any conference participant or attendee;
    • behavior deemed to be excessively loud and/or disruptive of a meeting or any other event; and
    • unlawful conduct or activity of any kind.
    • Reporting inappropriate behavior:
If you are the subject of or witness conduct in violation of these guidelines during our Winter Meeting, please notify a WCTWS board member.

Anyone experiencing or witnessing behavior that constitutes an immediate or serious threat to public safety is advised to locate a phone and/or ask for security to dial 911.

At all times, WCTWS reserves the right, in its sole and reasonable discretion, to have individuals acting in an unprofessional manner or contrary to these guidelines removed from the meeting and the right to prohibit their attendance at any future meeting. Attendance at the WCTWS Winter Meeting is a privilege, not a right. We appreciate your attention to these guidelines and wish you a productive and meaningful Winter Meeting.

COVID-19 Guidelines

As our first in-person conference since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we look forward to being together again. It is important, however, to be aware of the continued presence of COVID-19, the risks associated with attending an in-person event, and the need for additional precautions to help protect yourself and others. In collaboration with our venues and local partners, we have ensured the following measures to promote a safe environment for our attendees.

  • Safe Facilities — The La Crosse Radisson has partnered with Ecolab to reinforce our ongoing commitment with five Safety First protocols for effectively disinfecting and maintaining all areas of the hotel. Ecolab’s standards have helped guide their best-in-class training curriculum that provides hotels with tools and resources to educate hotel team members on the most up-to-date health and safety protocols. With the use of industry-leading, high-quality cleaning products, the hotel team members are able to provide a clean and safe stay in which guests feel confident and comfortable.

  • Sanitation and Hygiene — Hand sanitizer dispensers and face coverings will be available throughout the meeting and event spaces.

  • Social Distancing Stickers— To facilitate a comfortable conference experience for all attendees and encourage respectful boundaries, we will be asking registrants to indicate their social distancing preferences on their name tag. These preferences will be used to distinguish attendees based on their level of comfort with social interaction as follows:

    • Green — I’m vaxxed! Hugs and handshakes welcome.

    • Yellow — I err on the side of caution. I may be comfortable with elbow bumps and small groups, but please ask before getting too close.

    • Red — Greet at six feet! Absolutely no contact and please respect my space.

    • Black — Prefer not to specify

  • Shared Responsibility — The WCTWS strongly recommends all attendees test for COVID-19 72 hours before arriving at the conference and take the following precautions, as consistent with CDC guidance:

  • Respect – Respect those who choose to wear a mask. Respect those who choose not to wear a mask. We are inclusive of everyone and want those who may be at higher risk to feel included. Respect others who want to network at a distance while wearing a mask.
